Independence Day Of Algeria 5 July

Image
WAELE AFRICA Foundation Wishes to congratulate the government and people of Algeria on the occasion of her National Day and 61 independence. We wish your country and all its people happiness, continued success and prosperity.  This national holiday is celebrated on July 5th each year. The holiday was established to celebrate the anniversary of Algeria's independence from France on July 5th 1962.  History From the start of the sixteenth century, Algeria had been under partial rule of the Ottoman Empire. In 1830, the country was invaded by France. The conquest of Algeria was a long and bloody affair, and unusually for French foreign territories, Algeria's status was that it was treated as being part of France rather than as a colony. Emigration from Europe to Algeria was encouraged by the French, with tribal lands confiscated by the French government and Europeans even becoming the majority of the population in some cities like Algiers. In the middle of the twentieth century, lo...

WAELE AFRICA Foundation Wishes to congratulate the government and people of Comoros on the occasion of her National Day and 48 independence. We wish your country and all its people happiness, continued success and prosperity Independence Day is a public holiday in Comoros, observed on July 6th each year. History Comoros is a series of three islands (Grande Comore, Anjouan and Moheli) located in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa. The islands first encountered Europeans when Portuguese explorers at the start of the 16th century, though it was France who established colonial rule on Mayotte (the westernmost of the islands) in 1841 when a local king ceded the island to France. Political infighting amongst the Islanders meant that resistance to the French appropriation was limited and by 1908 France had unified the islands under one administration. In 1912 the ...

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN CONFLICT – June 19

Image
Every year on June 19th, the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict raises awareness for conflict-related sexual violence. The day also honors the victims and survivors of sexual violence around the world. #EliminationSexualViolenceInConflict The United Nations defines conflict-related sexual violence as any of the following acts: ●Rape ●Sexual slavery ●Forced prostitution ●Forced pregnancy ●Trafficking ●Forced abortion ●Forced marriage ●Enforced sterilization Women and girls are not the only victims of conflict-related sexual violence. Men and boys are also subject to it as well. Unfortunately, many survivors of this type of sexual violence do not come forward. This is primarily due to fear and cultural stigmas. When the survivors do not come forward, justice does not get served. It also allows the perpetrators to repeat their violent acts. The exact number of victims of conflict-related sexual violence is unknown. This is because of the lack of vic...

The UN Security Council strongly condemned the incident and the apartheid government....

WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY – June 15

Image

Nigerian Democracy Day - 12 June

Image
Democracy Day is a national public holiday in Nigeria. From 2019, it will be celebrated on June 12th each year. It was previously observed on May 29th. The holiday marks the annulled general election of June 12th 1993. History of Nigerian Democracy Day Since 2000, Nigeria has been celebrating May 29th as Democracy Day. With the election of General Olusegun Obasanjo as President, May 29th 199 was the second time in Nigeria's history that an elected civilian administration was restored after the rule of a military junta. The first time this happened was on October 21st 1979. In June 2018, President Buhari announced that Democracy Day would move to June 12th from 2019. The view of the federal government is that the annulled general election of June 12th 1993 is a more fitting occasion for Democracy Day to represent than the events of May 1999. On June 12th 1993 many millions of Nigerians expressed their democratic will in a general election. The election was presumed to have been wo...

WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOR – June 12

Image
June 12 is set aside to focus on ending child labor. The World Day Against Child Labor is held annually on June 12 as an international day to raise awareness and prompt action to stop child labor in all of its forms. Supporters of the day work year round to see that children everywhere are not working in fields or factories, or even worse places. It is estimated that between 215 million and 220 million children are working full time instead of being in school or on a playground. #NoChildLabor The United Nations estimates that almost 75 million victims of child labor are aged 5-11 years. Forty-two million children (28%) are 12-14 years old; 37 million (24%) are 15-17 years old. More than half of them are exposed to the worst forms of child labor such as working in hazardous environments – slavery, or other types of forced labor, illicit activities including drug trafficking and prostitution, as well as involvement in armed conflict. WORLD BRAIN TUMOR DAY – June 8

Image
Every year on June 8th, World Brain Tumor Day raises awareness and educates people about brain tumors. The day also pays tribute to those affected by brain tumors. #WorldBrainTumorDay In the United States, over 700,000 people live with brain tumors. In just one year, 84,000 people in the country will be diagnosed with a brain tumor. Brain tumors are either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous.) A malignant tumor is sometimes referred to as brain cancer. This type of cancer falls into the same category as central nervous system cancers. On a global scale, 330,000 children and adults worldwide were diagnosed with cancer of the central nervous system in one year. This number continues to rise along with the mortality rate for brain cancer. Because of the high mortality rate of brain cancer, it is vital to understand the symptoms. As with most cancers, early detection is key. The earlier a brain tumor is detected, the easier it is to treat. Common symptoms associated with a...

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF INNOCENT CHILDREN VICTIMS OF AGGRESSION – June 4

Image
Every year on June 4th, the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression acknowledges the pain that children around the world suffer. Many of these children are victims of physical, mental, and emotional abuse. It’s also a day that the UN affirms its duty to protect children’s rights. #InnocentChildrenVictimsOfAggressionDay Sadly, children are among the most innocent victims of pain and suffering. Throughout the world, many children live in areas where war and conflict is a part of their everyday life. According the recent statistics, 536 million children live in countries affected by conflict or disasters. About 50 million children have been displaced from their home. When these children get displaced, it increases their vulnerability to violence and exploitation. This is largely due to the fact that these children become orphans or are separated from their families. Emotional, physical, sexual, and mental abuse is also a reality for millions of children througho...

Africa Celebrate The 60th Anniversary of the OAU-AU On Africa Day

Image
Today May 25th, the African continent is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and its successor, the African Union. It was on this date in 1963, that 32 Heads of independent African States met in Addis Ababa Ethiopia along with leaders from African liberation movements to craft a way forward for Africa’s complete independence from imperialism, colonialism and apartheid.  The outcome of the meeting was the creation of Africa’s first post-independence continental institution, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The OAU was formed as a manifestation of the pan-African vision for an Africa that was united, free and in control of its own destiny and this was solemnised in the OAU Charter which was adopted on May 25 #AfricaDay, 1963. The celebration of the 60th anniversary is an opportunity to recognize the role and contribution of the founders of the continental organization and many other Africans on the continent and in the diaspora w...
