International Day of Plant Health, 12 May

Healthy plants can help to end hunger, reduce poverty, protect the environment, and boost economic development. Plants are life – we depend on them for 80 percent of the food we eat and 98 percent of the oxygen we breathe. But international travel and trade has been associated with the introduction and spread of plant pests. Invasive pest species are one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss and threaten the delicate web of life that sustains our planet. Pests and diseases have also been associated with rising temperatures which create new niches for pests to populate and spread. In response, the use of pesticides could increase, which harms pollinators, natural pest enemies and organisms crucial for a healthy environment. Protecting plant health is essential by promoting environmentally friendly practices such as integrated pest management. International standards for phytosanitary measures (ISPMs) in trade also help prevent the introduction and spread of plant pests across b...

INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY – May 12

Image
International Nurses Day (IND) is observed around the world May 12 (the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth in 1820). The day is set aside to honor and note the many contributions nurses make to society. Nurses care for our loved ones at some of the most challenging times of their lives. They may run short of time, but not compassion. #InternationalNursesDay In Australia, Canada, the United States, and other countries, International Nurses Day often is part of a week-long celebration, usually referred to as National Nurses Week. CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY Do you personally know a nurse? Send a letter of appreciation. Invite a nurse to make a presentation about the profession at retirement homes, school, businesses. Use #InternationalNursesDay or #VoiceToLead to share on social media. INTERNATIONAL NURSES  DAY HISTORY The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965. Florence Nightingale became an essential figure in nursing in the 18...

Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs inside the body). #WorldLupusDay World Lupus Day serves to call attention to the impact that lupus has on people around the world. Lupus is a serious health condition that affects the immune system. Usually, the immune system produces antibodies that protect the b...
