INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN CONFLICT – June 19

Image
Every year on June 19th, the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict raises awareness for conflict-related sexual violence. The day also honors the victims and survivors of sexual violence around the world. #EliminationSexualViolenceInConflict The United Nations defines conflict-related sexual violence as any of the following acts: ●Rape ●Sexual slavery ●Forced prostitution ●Forced pregnancy ●Trafficking ●Forced abortion ●Forced marriage ●Enforced sterilization Women and girls are not the only victims of conflict-related sexual violence. Men and boys are also subject to it as well. Unfortunately, many survivors of this type of sexual violence do not come forward. This is primarily due to fear and cultural stigmas. When the survivors do not come forward, justice does not get served. It also allows the perpetrators to repeat their violent acts. The exact number of victims of conflict-related sexual violence is unknown. This is because of the lack of vic...

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD – June 16

Image
On June 16th, International Day of the African Child commemorates those killed during the Soweto Uprising in South Africa. The day also raises awareness of the ongoing need to improve education for children in Africa. #DayOfTheAfricanChild The Soweto Uprising began on June 16, 1976. Thousands of black schoolchildren in South Africa led this series of protests and demonstrations. The students were protesting against issues related to government-sanctioned apartheid within the student community. On their way to Orlando Stadium in Soweto, heavily armed police met the students. The police fired tear gas and live ammunition at the students. The result was a revolt directed against the South African government. The revolt spread throughout the country and continued for several months. It is believed that more than 170 people died during the Soweto Uprising. One of the youngest victims was just 12-years-old. The UN Security Council strongly condemned the incident and the apartheid government....

WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY – June 15

Every year on June 15th, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day alerts others of the prevalence and horrors of elder abuse. It’s also a day to educate the public on knowing the signs of elder abuse and how to stop it. #WorldElderAbuseAwarenessDay According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in six people 60 years and older experience abuse each year. Seniors in nursing homes and long-term care facilities are at greater risk of elder abuse. This type of abuse is widespread around the world. However, elder abuse cases are the least investigated types of violence. This means that many perpetrators get away with abusing the elderly. Types of Elder Abuse ■Physical – the use of physical force that results in bodily injury ■Sexual – nonconsensual sexual contact ■Emotional – infliction of pain or anguish through verbal or non-verbal attacks ■Financial Exploitation – illegal or improper use of funds or assets ■Neglect – failure to fulfill the obligations of caring for someone ■Abandonme...

Nigerian Democracy Day - 12 June

Image
Democracy Day is a national public holiday in Nigeria. From 2019, it will be celebrated on June 12th each year. It was previously observed on May 29th. The holiday marks the annulled general election of June 12th 1993. History of Nigerian Democracy Day Since 2000, Nigeria has been celebrating May 29th as Democracy Day. With the election of General Olusegun Obasanjo as President, May 29th 199 was the second time in Nigeria's history that an elected civilian administration was restored after the rule of a military junta. The first time this happened was on October 21st 1979. In June 2018, President Buhari announced that Democracy Day would move to June 12th from 2019. The view of the federal government is that the annulled general election of June 12th 1993 is a more fitting occasion for Democracy Day to represent than the events of May 1999. On June 12th 1993 many millions of Nigerians expressed their democratic will in a general election. The election was presumed to have been wo...

WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOR – June 12

June 12 is set aside to focus on ending child labor. The World Day Against Child Labor is held annually on June 12 as an international day to raise awareness and prompt action to stop child labor in all of its forms. Supporters of the day work year round to see that children everywhere are not working in fields or factories, or even worse places. Forty-two million children (28%) are 12-14 years old; 37 million (24%) are 15-17 years old. More than half of them are exposed to the worst forms of child labor such as working in hazardous environments – slavery, or other types of forced labor, illicit activities including drug trafficking and prostitution, as well as involvement in armed conflict. WORLD BRAIN TUMOR DAY – June 8

Image
Every year on June 8th, World Brain Tumor Day raises awareness and educates people about brain tumors. The day also pays tribute to those affected by brain tumors. #WorldBrainTumorDay In the United States, over 700,000 people live with brain tumors. In just one year, 84,000 people in the country will be diagnosed with a brain tumor. Brain tumors are either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous.) A malignant tumor is sometimes referred to as brain cancer. This type of cancer falls into the same category as central nervous system cancers. On a global scale, 330,000 children and adults worldwide were diagnosed with cancer of the central nervous system in one year. This number continues to rise along with the mortality rate for brain cancer. Because of the high mortality rate of brain cancer, it is vital to understand the symptoms. As with most cancers, early detection is key. The earlier a brain tumor is detected, the easier it is to treat. Common symptoms associated with a...
