INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE MIDWIFE – May 5

Image
The medical profession of a midwife is celebrated every year on May 5. The goal of the observance is to draw attention to this field of health care and to attract more registered nurses to become midwives. Midwives are qualified health care providers who receive comprehensive training and must pass an examination to become certified. A midwife will: ●Provide family planning and preconception care ●Do prenatal exams and order tests ●Watch physical and psychological health ●Help make your birth plans ●Advise about diet, exercise, meds, and staying healthy ●Educate and counsel your pregnancy, childbirth, and neonatal care ●Give emotional and practical support during labor ●Admit and discharge patients from the hospital ●Deliver babies Make referrals to doctors when needed Some of the first records of the occupation of midwife go back about 2,000 years before Christ. World Press Freedom Day 3 May

Image
Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights 2023 year marks the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day. Three decades have passed since it was proclaimed in 1993, in which we have seen substantial progress towards achieving a free press and freedom of expression around the world. The proliferation of independent media in many countries and the rise of digital technologies have enabled the free flow of information. However, media freedom, safety of journalists and freedom of expression are increasingly under attack, which impacts the fulfillment of other human rights. The international community faces multiple crises: conflicts and violence, persistent socio-economic inequalities driving migration, environmental crises and challenges to the health and wellbeing of people all around the world. At the same time, disinformation and misinformation online and offline proliferate, with serious impact on the insti...

Mental Health Awareness Month 2023

Image
The official theme for 2023's Mental Health Awareness Week is anxiety. For Mental Health Awareness Week 2023, we will look at how anxiety can affect people living with severe mental illness, what external factors can trigger this strong response, and what we can do to support our peers.  Everyone can feel anxious. But when you live with severe mental illness, anxiety can reach a whole new level. Stigma. Discrimination. Lack of support. Side effects of medication. Mania. Psychosis. Limited access to housing, employment, and welfare. These are all unique anxieties, faced on a daily basis by those of us experiencing mental illness.   But is that something you hear about often in today’s society? No. This year, for Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to change that. We’re fed up with being told to have a bath or light a scented candle. The world is different if you experience a mental illness. It’s time for people to truly understand what it is like to live in our shoes. It...

International Day of Women Judges 10 March

Image
To achieve justice, we need more women in justice Despite women’s increased engagement in public life, they remain significantly underrepresented in decision-making positions. In fact, a relatively small number of women have been, or are part of, the judiciary, particularly at senior judicial leadership positions. Women’s representation in the judiciary is key to ensuring that courts represent their citizens, address their concerns and hand down sound judgments. By their mere presence, women judges enhance the legitimacy of courts, sending a powerful signal that they are open and accessible to those who seek recourse to justice. The entry of women judges into spaces from which they had historically been excluded has been a positive step in the direction of judiciaries being perceived as being more transparent, inclusive, and representative of the people whose lives they affect. By marking the day, we will reaffirm our commitment to develop and implement appropriate and effective nation...
